Best Honda Deals: April 2011 Lease and Purchase

By now, you’re probably well aware of the impact the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has had on the automotive industry. The destruction has forced some Japanese plants to shut down, and as a result, some parts produced in Japan can’t be shipped to America. Eighty percent of Hondas sold in the U.S. are built in the U.S., but plants still depend on Japanese suppliers for some parts. With fewer components, Honda has decreased production at American plants to ration supplies. Honda isn’t the only automaker impacted by this natural disaster. For detailed information on how the earthquake and tsunami have affected Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and some U.S. automakers, read What the Disaster in Japan Means for Car Buyers Here.

The deals Honda offered in March are good until May 5, but because of production issues, you may have trouble finding the model you want. Analysts expect the disruptions to continue until mid-June, so if you want a specific model or option, it may pay to wait.

Right now, you can get no money down and less than $300 in monthly payments on most models. The Honda Civic, Insight, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Fit and Civic Hybrid are available for lease with no money down. With the exception of the Odyssey, your monthly payments won’t be more than $300. These are exciting deals, but you should always check the competition to see if you’re really saving money.

With a gallon of gas reaching a national average of $3.60 at the end of March, you’re probably looking for a small, fuel-efficient vehicle. If so, look at the Honda Civic and the Fit. The financing deals on these models are identical, so what it comes down to is deciding which model best fits your budget and your lifestyle. The Fit averages as much as 28/35 mpg city/highway, while the Civic gets 25/36 mpg city/highway. The Fit is also about $700 cheaper than the Civic and has 57.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Get the Fit if you want one of the most utilitarian hatchbacks on the market, good fuel economy and a lower base price. As long as you don’t mind its exterior styling, you’ll be good to go. If you want a more conservative design, the Civic may suit your tastes.

Honda also makes two family oriented hybrids – the Insight and Civic Hybrid – but you might have trouble getting one. They’re produced in Japan, and currently, Honda isn’t taking orders for either model. If you can get one that’s still on dealer lots, there are a few things you should know. First, their performance isn’t as refined as the performance on the Fit or gasoline-only Civic. Second, neither is the best hybrid on the market. With fuel economy ratings of 40/43 mpg city/highway, you’ll visit the pump a lot less, but those ratings are significantly lower than the Toyota Prius’ 51/48 mpg city/highway. Then, there’s price. Of the three, the Insight is the least expensive. It starts at $18,200 – $4,850 less than the Prius. The Civic Hybrid is the priciest, and costs $900 more than the Prius. The Prius starts at $23,050. When you account for price and fuel economy, the Prius is the best deal. Unfortunately, this hybrid is in a similar predicament. Currently, it is in limited production, and some dealers have already started running out. Getting a Prius and the features you want could be difficult.

Whether you get the Civic Hybrid, Insight or Prius, do your research before heading to the dealership. Prices for vehicles built in Japan have started to rise, and some dealers may take advantage of consumers by hiking prices. To avoid shopping, you can always wait. Gas prices are unpredictable and may not stay high for long. And, with production slowly resuming in Japan, you should be able to get the model you want in the next few months.
