Mercedes-Benz A-Class Will Debut at NY Auto Show

Currently, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t have a U.S. model that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series or Volkswagen GTI – three upscale small cars that are known for their quality interiors and great performance. That, however, many change soon. Mercedes-Benz will release the A-Class concept at the New York and Shanghai Auto Shows later this month.

Currently, the A-Class isn’t available in the U.S. “The exterior design of the Concept A-Class looks dramatically different from that of the current production model, which is not marketed in North America,” writes Inside Line. “The latter was designed originally with a unique ‘sandwich’ platform that was engineered to accommodate a variety of drivetrains, including a pure electric system. The next-generation A-Class, as embodied in the concept, shifts to a more conventional transverse front-wheel-drive layout.”

As for its specifications, the A-Class concept has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 210 horsepower. This engine is paired with a dual-clutch transmission. Car and Driver thinks this powertrain will be a great competitor for the BMW 1-Series, the Audi A3 and the Volkswagen GTI. “It may be a front-wheel-drive compact underneath, but the A-Class concept is liquid lust,” they write.

In a press release, Mercedes-Benz adds that the A-Class has a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist, a system that lowers the risk of getting into a rear-end collision. “This assistance system gives a visual and acoustic warning to an inattentive driver and prepares Brake Assist for a precise braking response. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver forcefully operates the brake pedal.” The A-Class also has smart phone integration.

The industry also finds this small car attractive. “The Mercedes-Benz Concept A features heavy design cues from the F800 Style Concept we saw last year, shrunk and compacted to fit a smaller silhouette,” says egmCarTech. But, as a concept, the A-Class will look different if it’s produced because Mercedes must meet U.S. safety laws.

While the automotive industry has great expectations, consumers shouldn’t get too excited because Mercedes hasn’t said if the A-Class will actually make it stateside. But, if you’re interested, keep your ears open – it’s a great option if you’re looking for a small car from Mercedes.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class concept debuts at the New York Auto show this month. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
