Honda Outlook for Future Auto Production as of April 25, 2011
Concerning production in Japan of finished units and parts for overseas production, production volume will remain at approximately 50% of the original production plan until the end of June. As the supply of parts remains fluid, decisions concerning production from July on will be made step-by-step while monitoring the situation, toward the expected normalization of production in Japan before the end of 2011.
Summary of Consolidated Financial Results for the Fiscal 4th Quarter and the Fiscal Year ended March 31, 2011
TOKYO, Japan, April 28, 2011 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal fourth quarter and the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011.
Consolidated Financial Summary:
Despite the impacts of the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 and the unfavorable currency effects due to appreciation of the Japanese yen, consolidated operating income for the fiscal fourth quarter (January 1, 2011 through March 31, 2011) was 46.2 billion yen primarily due to the expansion of motorcycle and automobile businesses in emerging markets and the contribution of financial business in North America.
Can GM win back sales supremacy from Toyota?
This is not a scene from the war in Libya. Rather, it is a description of the earthquake-and-tsunami-ravaged plains of northeast Japan, where a group of General Motors purchasing department managers were assigned in the days after the March 11 natural disaster struck.

Ford Taurus Gets Updates for 2013
Ford will unveil the 2013 Taurus today at the New York auto show, but some automotive writers are already unimpressed with many of the changes, and say that some aspects that needed a refresh – such as interior space – were ignored.
“There's nothing revolutionary in the new Taurus, aside from the fact that Ford has been able to renew its full-size sedan twice in the same time GM has let the Impala turn into rental-car compost,” writes Jalopnik. “Instead, Ford has made scores of small changes — from adding MyFord Touch into the revised dash to full LED tail lamps — meant to keep the Taurus from going stale.

Toyota says Normal Production will Resume by Year's End
The disaster in Japan has hit automakers hard, and resuming normal production for Toyota may take at least six more months. “After an in-depth analysis of its suppliers affected by the earthquake and tsunami, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced today that global production will begin to ramp up as soon as July in Japan and August in North America, with all models back to normal production by November or December 2011,” says Toyota in a press release.
However, this timeline won’t necessarily apply to all vehicles. “In Japan, depending on the model, operations will start returning to normal in July,” writes the Detroit News. “Outside Japan, Toyota expects the normalization of its operations to start in August and be fully restored around November or December. The one-month lag takes account of the time it takes to ship parts from Japan to plants abroad.”
If you own a Toyota the low production volume won’t affect your ability to get replacement parts. Toyota reports that “there are approximately 150 parts affecting new-vehicle production, mainly electronic, rubber and paint-related. However, replacement parts for sales service and repair are available.”

Nissan plans to build the Infiniti JX in Tennessee
The move is part of Carlos Tavares' mission of getting Nissan and Infiniti products out of yen and into dollars, but that will require the automaker to move some products around. Tavares also wants to buy more parts from North American suppliers.
The JX, which Nissan revealed earlier this week, will make the third new product planned for Smyrna, a plant that already had a full plate of vehicles to build.
Tavares announced in January that Smyrna also will take over production of the popular Nissan Rogue crossover, starting with a newly designed version in 2013. Additionally, Smyrna is already undergoing a $1.4 billion project to add production of the electric Nissan Leaf and its lithium-ion battery modules.
Nissan is claiming 300,000 units of Smyrna's production capacity for the Rogue and Leaf alone. The company has not indicated what sales volume it expects for the large new Infiniti.
Speaking at the opening of the New York auto show Wednesday morning, Tavares said Nissan will move two other Smyrna models--the Frontier compact pickup and Xterra SUV--to its factory in Canton, Miss., starting in 2012.
Once the shift is complete in 2013, Nissan will build six models at each factory. Smyrna will produce the Rogue, Leaf, Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder and Infiniti JX. Canton will produce the Xterra, Frontier, Altima, Titan pickup, Armada SUV and the NV commercial van.
The plan is part of Tavares' new mission to reduce
He said building the JX in Tennessee will help Nissan reach a new goal of locally sourcing 85 percent of the Nissan and Infiniti vehicles sold in the Americas region.
He said North American plants currently deliver only 69 percent of the company's U.S. volume. Since last year, when the Infiniti QX56 SUV was redesigned and moved from Canton to a factory in Japan, all Infiniti models are imported from Japan.
"With today's announcements, we remain on track to localize our manufacturing base around the world, especially in the Americas," Tavares said. "This drive for balance and flexibility across our operations is essential to support our growth plans in the region."
Nissan North America's reliance on vehicles and parts built in Japan has been a drain on its earnings over the past two years as the yen appreciated against the dollar.
The new plan will make the JX the only Infiniti model produced outside of Japan.

GM boosts output of the Cadillac CTS V6 for 2012
General
The 2012 version of the V6 delivers 318 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. That compares with 304 hp and 273 lb-ft for the 2011 version. Fuel economy remains at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
The major changes include larger intake valves and a revised intake port design for better engine breathing. A longer duration for the intake cam lets more air flow into each cylinder.
GM shaved about 21 pounds off the engine by switching from an aluminum to a plastic intake manifold, adopting an integrated cylinder head and exhaust manifold design, and using lighter-weight connecting rods and structural front cover.
Other changes to the 2012
Additionally, the CTS sedan and wagon get chrome door handles with the Touring package. Cars with the 3.6-liter V6 will have 19-inch polished wheels and Recaro 14-way adjustable performance seats. The 3.0-liter version will have 18-inch wheels with a pearl-nickel finish.
The CTS also gets slight changes to its grille and the addition of Bluetooth technology. Blind-zone alert technology is available on the CTS coupe.
Prices for the 2012 Cadillac CTS line will be announced late this summer
2013 Chevrolet Malibu Debuts in Shanghai
Though it won’t make its New York debut for a few days, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu debuted at the Shanghai auto show last night. This redesigned midsize sedan has a lot riding on it.
Bloomberg says, “General Motors Co. (GM) redesigned its Chevrolet Malibu with better fuel economy and sportier looks as the automaker seeks to regain sales in the U.S. and improve the Chevy brand’s global reputation.”
Whereas the current Malibu is only sold in a few markets, Chevrolet intends the 2013 model to be a truly global car. The Detroit Free Press writes, “The new Malibu replaces an acclaimed midsize sedan that reinvigorated Chevrolet car sales and helped the brand compete with best-sellers such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Chevy now wants to expand the sedan's appeal to more than 100 countries around the world.”
USA Today says the 2013 Malibu has what people have come to expect from the current Malibu, and then some. “Though new, it comes across as an improved version of the current Malibu, which has held up well in the intensely competitive midsize segment.” When it debuted, the current-generation Malibu was North American Car of the Year, so the 2013 model has some big tires to fill.
Though the changes seem more evolutionary than revolutionary, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu has several features that set it apart from the midsize pack. The Malibu will be powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that Chevy says is more efficient and powerful than the outgoing four-cylinder engines. Like the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, there will be no V6 option. The engine will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Also helping with fuel economy is more aerodynamic styling. Jeanne Merchant, GM’s Line Director for Global Midsize cars says that the Malibu has fuel economy-boosting features, like air shutters in the grille, which Chevrolet developed on the high-mpg Chevrolet Cruze Eco.
Inside, the Malibu has a redesigned cabin, including a seven-inch touchscreen radio face (on all but the base models) that hides a six-inch deep storage compartment. The 2013 Malibu will also feature MyLink, an infotainment system that allows users to connect to internet radio services like Pandora. There’s four cubic feet more passenger space than in the current Malibu.
The 2013 Malibu has also pushed the class’ envelope on safety. Available lane departure and forward collision warning systems are features usually seen only in upscale midsize cars. However, pricing on the 2013 Malibu hasn’t been announced yet. Opting for the extra safety features could push the price up toward luxury car territory.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Gets Updated Engine
The year is nearly halfway through, and automakers are starting to release specs for 2012 models. Chevrolet is already reporting updates for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro.
In a press release, GM writes that it will give the 2012 Camaro an “improved version of its standard 3.6L direct injection V-6 engine, a new FE4 performance suspension package for SS coupes and several interior and technology improvements, such as a revised instrument panel design, new steering wheel and rear camera system.” The V6 engine will produce 323 horsepower, 11 more than the 2011 engine. This engine, called the LFX, is 20.5 pounds lighter and averages 30 mpg on the highway, which is what the 2011 model got. Reviewers haven’t tested the latest LFX because it hasn’t gone into production yet, but we’ll update you when test drives emerge.
For now, the automotive industry is looking forward to these updates. “There were a number of complaints with the Chevrolet Camaro when it finally reached reality after years as a well-known concept,” writes Kicking Tires. “For the 2012 model year, a few complaints have been addressed with upgrades to interior materials as well as a backup camera to help with coupe’s poor visibility.”
If you want a more standout muscle car, Chevrolet will release the 45th Anniversary Camaro this summer. This model will get the same changes as the base model, but according to Chevrolet, it will have “additional unique design elements, inside and out.” These include hood and deck stripes, a rear spoiler and HID headlamps, black leather seats and the 45th Anniversary logo on the steering wheel, seats and door inserts. Naturally, this model will cost more than the base Camaro, which started at $22,680 for the 2011 model year, but Chevrolet hasn’t released pricing data.
The updated 2012 Camaro and 45th Anniversary Special Edition go on sale this summer.

Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck in Bangkok debut
Chevrolet presents the first images of Colorado Show Truck , a prototype that anticipates the style of the new Chevrolet Colorado (commercial launch later this year) a truck sold untill now only in USA and Thailand. The eastern state is the world’s largest market for trucks mid-sizer, ” so this was the perfect place to unveil our new Colorado “, said Susan Docherty, vice president of marketing for General Motors International Operations.
The prototype uses the classic truck format with a cockpit that integrates with the body cap and half rear door with upwind opening, all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. The engine is a 2.8 turbodiesel – no more details released - which is defined as excellent for heavy loads and towing. From this concept some features will be kept for the new Chevrolet Colorado, starting with the double front grille. The finest interior and the latest technological equipment with multimedia and internet connection are essential to collect the favors on the market.
Ford Expands F-150 Airbag Recall
And unfortunately, the F-150 is no longer the only vehicle affected. “The recall announced Thursday includes 16,000 2006 Lincoln Mark LT pickups,” adds the Detroit News. “Ford is also recalling 89,000 pickups in Canada and 47,000 in Mexico.”
Crossed wires are to blame for the airbag issues in Ford’s popular full size pickup. “If the clockspring jumper wire comes in contact with the driver side frontal air bag lower horn plate, the wire insulation may become chafed, creating a potential for a short circuit,” reports NHTSA. “If this occurs the air bag warning lamp may illuminate indicating that service is required.”
Owners initially affected by the recall should have been notified by Ford last month, but now that the recall has expanded, newly-affected vehicles will be called in for service around May 9, 2011. If you’re concerned that you’re Ford or Lincoln truck might be affected, you can call Ford directly at 1-888-327-4236.
Hyundai Equus earns IIHS "Top Safety Pick" Status
The Hyundai Equus comes with an iPad for an owner’s manual, and pick-up and drop-up service for maintenance. Now it also comes with top crash test scores. The Equus earned “Top Safety Pick” status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety yesterday. “The Equus is rated good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and it has electronic stability control, another requirement for earning the Institute's highest accolade,” reports the IIHS. “In the Institute's roof strength test for rollover protection, the roof of the Equus withstood a force equal to 4.87 times the car's weight.”
The Equus joins a sizeable list of luxury large cars to earn this award, which include the BMW 5-Series, Infiniti M, Lincoln MKS, Mercedes E-Class and Volvo S80. Hyundai’s share of “Top Safety Pick” winners isn’t confined to its most expensive model. The Hyundai Genesis, Sonata, Santa Fe and Tucson are also IIHS “Top Safety Picks.”

Honda Plants Remain Closed, R&D To Be Rebuilt After Massive Damage
Honda‘s manufacturing plants will remain closed, while the heart of their company, the research & development facility in Tochigi, Japan, will undergo months of repairs after being severely damaged by the earthquake that devastated Japan earlier in March.
Honda originally planned to keep their plants closed until March 27th but has decided to extend the closures until April 3rd. Workers at Tochigi will be transferred to other locations. The company released a statement claiming “based on the expectation that it will take several months until the complete recovery of these facilities, Honda decided to temporally transfer some functions such as the automobile product development, development of manufacturing technologies and procurement to Honda operations in other locations such as Sayama, Suzuka, and Wako.”
Supplies of vehicles like the Honda Fit, CR-V and Acura TSX will be affected by the production delays. One person died and 30 were injuried when a wall at a cafeteria at the Tochigi facility collapsed. Honda held meetings at a nearby restaurant after employees were barred from entering the building for safety reasons. Honda’s parts suppliers have also told the company that it will take a week for them to resume normal production schedules.
Honda Plants Could Be Hit By Parts Shortage For Up To 90 Days
Honda plants in North America could be operating at well below capacity as a shortage of parts from Japan threatens to cripple the automaker’s output for as long as 90 days.
Speaking with Automotive News, Honda’s executive Vice-President John Mendel estimated a 60 to 90 day slowdown, with 30 days being an optimistic forecast. Honda has already cut production in half at 5 of its 6 North American plants due to a parts shortage, and 90 percent of Hondas sold in North America are assembled here. While 600 of its 710 suppliers are based in North America, a single missing part can result in a production stoppage.
Mendel highlighted the dire situation in Japan, stating ”In some places, they are still recovering bodies. And even if you have a warehouse full of finished microchips, the roads are ruined, and you are in the radiation zone. What are you going to do?” Honda is estimated to have a 47 day supply of vehicles, and the company is also monitoring parts order by dealers to make sure that hoarding and other shady practices do not occur.
Honda currently imports the Fit and CR-Z from Japan.
Toyota To Reduce North American Vehicle Production
Toyota is the latest automaker to adjust their North American production schedules, with plants idling on April 15, 18, 21, 22, and 25. Toyota’s engine and component factories will follow a similar schedule, while their Georgetown, Kentucky facility will remain open on April 21.
Employees at the plants will have the option of report to work for training programs, use vacation time or take unpaid days off. While Toyota claims that 85 percent of their parts are sourced from North America, the fact is that one missing part, no matter how inconsequential, can halt an entire production line for indefinite periods of time, and this phenomenon is something that will be a common occurrence during these next few months.
Suzuki plants operations (Report #9)
Suzuki Motor Corporation announces that the operations of automobile assembling plants (Kosai, Iwata and Sagara) after 11 April, for the moment, will be on the day-shift while we use available parts.
Also, regarding the motorcycle assembling plant (Toyokawa), although we have some delay, we will operate as planned for the moment.
Operations hereafter will be decided accordingly, by assessing the situation of suppliers and the delivery of parts.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused Suzuki customers.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Will Debut at NY Auto Show
Currently, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t have a U.S. model that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series or Volkswagen GTI – three upscale small cars that are known for their quality interiors and great performance. That, however, many change soon. Mercedes-Benz will release the A-Class concept at the New York and Shanghai Auto Shows later this month.
Currently, the A-Class isn’t available in the U.S. “The exterior design of the Concept A-Class looks dramatically different from that of the current production model, which is not marketed in North America,” writes Inside Line. “The latter was designed originally with a unique ‘sandwich’ platform that was engineered to accommodate a variety of drivetrains, including a pure electric system. The next-generation A-Class, as embodied in the concept, shifts to a more conventional transverse front-wheel-drive layout.”
As for its specifications, the A-Class concept has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 210 horsepower. This engine is paired with a dual-clutch transmission. Car and Driver thinks this powertrain will be a great competitor for the BMW 1-Series, the Audi A3 and the Volkswagen GTI. “It may be a front-wheel-drive compact underneath, but the A-Class concept is liquid lust,” they write.
In a press release, Mercedes-Benz adds that the A-Class has a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist, a system that lowers the risk of getting into a rear-end collision. “This assistance system gives a visual and acoustic warning to an inattentive driver and prepares Brake Assist for a precise braking response. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver forcefully operates the brake pedal.” The A-Class also has smart phone integration.
The industry also finds this small car attractive. “The Mercedes-Benz Concept A features heavy design cues from the F800 Style Concept we saw last year, shrunk and compacted to fit a smaller silhouette,” says egmCarTech. But, as a concept, the A-Class will look different if it’s produced because Mercedes must meet U.S. safety laws.
While the automotive industry has great expectations, consumers shouldn’t get too excited because Mercedes hasn’t said if the A-Class will actually make it stateside. But, if you’re interested, keep your ears open – it’s a great option if you’re looking for a small car from Mercedes.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class concept debuts at the New York Auto show this month. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.

Lexus LF-Gh teaser pics
Teaser shots show close ups of front and rear lights ahead of New York debut.
By Ben Foulds
06th April 2011
Lexus has released these two pictures of the LF-Gh concept due to be unveiled at the 2011 New York motor show.
And while they don’t give much away, the images do at least give us a glimpse of what to expect from the show car, which will preview the new hybrid-only GS executive saloon.
The front end of the LF-Gh – which stands for ‘Lexus Future G-Series hybrid’ – appears to feature a CT200h-inspired headlamp design with a separate LED strip underneath, while the grille includes a distinctive zig-zag pattern.. At the back, sharp-edged tail-lamps appear to confirm our previous assertion that the styling will be inspired by the LF-A supercar.
The new GS, scheduled to make its debut in 2012, will be larger and more luxurious than the current car, as well as using an extended version of the platform on which next year’s IS will be based.

2012 Honda Civic / Civic Hybrid / Civic Si Official Photos and Info
Concept cars and spy photos couldn’t prepare us for the stunning inoffensiveness of the ninth-generation Honda Civic, coming to dealers this spring as a 2012 model. Despite the sedate looks of the new models, they’re guaranteed shopper favorites—the company sold over 260,000 Civics in 2010, and the nameplate is likely to continue racking up big numbers going forward. That’s because the new car is shaping up to do what Civics have always done best: deliver good fuel economy and a fun steer at a sensible price.
New Styling? Who Gives a Sheetmetal?
“Evolutionary” perfectly describes the new Civic’s styling. The wedgy profile carries over, but both the 2012 sedan and coupe get more organic, taut sheetmetal in place of the outgoing cars’ slabby sides. The front and rear ends have more dimension than in the past, too. Perhaps the most significant styling change for the four-door is in its swap of the previous sedan’s scalloped taillights and concave rear for a bulbous style that’s reminiscent of the Mercedes C-class. The coupe looks more aggressive from the side and rear, especially in Si trim, and we dare suggest that it even looks racy. (We’re going to assume the heinous wheel gap in the photos is the result of poor Photoshop work and not some sort of off-road package.)
Overall, it’s a car that’s meant to appeal to the masses, and the ninth-gen Civic accomplishes the mission of looking better without making enough of a change to scare away any shoppers. In other words, think the difference between original Triscuits and new Garden Herb Triscuits.
This new Civic also gets a revamped interior, although official photography from Honda is thus far limited to a single shot. The driver-oriented layout from the last-gen car remains, as does the two-tiered dash, featuring a digital speedo seated in the mezzanine. The Civic has picked up a new steering wheel, as well as new shapes for the vents. In other news, the IRS has revamped several earned-income tax-exemption forms for the 2011 tax year.
With Okay Power Comes Great Fuel Economy
Honda rarely—if ever—carries a flag into horsepower wars. As such, the regular-spec 2012 Civic will pack a 140-hp, 1.8-liter inline-four, as does the current car; Honda remains mum on whether torque will increase from last year’s 128 lb-ft. What changes somewhat, however, is fuel economy, with ratings improving from 25 mpg city/36 highway for the automatic-equipped 2011 Civic to an estimated 39 mpg highway for 2012. (The city rating for the new Civic hasn’t been announced.) This engine will be paired with a five-speed automatic, and although it’s not listed in the press release, we’re certain a five-speed manual will also show up.
Honda also has even more fuel-conscious shoppers covered. A new Civic HF model revives the nomenclature from past efficiency-minded Civics, and it promises 41 mpg on the highway with the 1.8-liter engine, although Big H hasn’t yet revealed the voodoo used to achieve the uptick in economy. At the top of the fuel-economy ladder sits the new Civic hybrid sedan, which is touted as pulling off an impressive 45 mpg combined, an improvement of 4 from the last generation. Like the outgoing car, the 2012 Civic hybrid will put out a combined 110 hp from its gas and electric power sources, but the engine has grown from 1.3 liters to 1.5, and the nickel-metal hydride battery has been replaced with a lighter and more compact lithium-ion pack. There also will be a Civic GX sedan, which burns natural gas with the same basic 140-hp engine as the regular car; its availability will be spread to all 50 states for this new generation.
The Civic sedan and coupe, HF, hybrid, and natural-gas models all will come standard with Honda’s Eco Assist system. This computerized coach is intended to help drivers optimize their on-road fuel economy, and will alter the transmission’s behavior in the Civic hybrid. The rest of the cars just get digitally displayed tips for efficient driving.
Two Flavors of Si
The new Civic’s biggest underhood change comes in the Si model, which will once again be sold as a sedan and coupe. The 2.0-liter inline-four is out, replaced with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder that also sees duty in the Acura TSX. In the Civic Si, it will make 200 hp and 170 lb-ft—increases of 3 hp and 31 lb-ft over the previous car—and is paired to the same slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission from the TSX. As in the past, a three-pedal setup is the only option for the Si. While we have no complaints about that, Honda failed to address the Si’s significant power deficit against much of its competition, in particular the 263-hp Mazdaspeed 3 and 265-hp Subaru Impreza WRX. We also hope that the 2.4-liter doesn’t make the new Si too mature; a lot of the thrill of the outgoing model was winding it up to the 8000-rpm redline. Honda says the EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of the new Si will be up to 31 mpg from last year’s 29.
Coming Soon to a Showroom Near You
Honda isn’t planning a formal auto-show reveal for the new Civic, but promises that detailed specs—including official EPA city and highway fuel-economy numbers, torque ratings, and dimensions—will be available in April. It’s around that time that we’ll slide behind the wheel of the new Civic, and customers should be able to start writing checks then, too.
Considering how much better the Civic sedan and coupe concepts looked in the metal versus the press pictures, we will reserve final judgment on the production models’ new duds until we see them up close. But if the new Civic turns out to be just as inoffensive in person as it is in photos, we promise not to be offended.
2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI gets an extra 20HP in the UK
In a strange and unpredictable marketing strategy, Subaru UK has decided to give potential customers the extra oomph they may need to go out and purchase an Impreza WRX STI. Between now and June 31, 2011, Subaru UK will be selling the standard WRX STI models for the typical £32,995 (about $53,500 at the current exchange rates), but add on an upgrade in engine power and satellite navigation system for FREE. Yes, that’s F-R-E-E.
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI comes with a 2.5 liter Boxer 16-valve turbo engine that produces 300 HP, but during this promotional period, the engine will be tweaked to deliver 320 HP and 331 lbs-ft of torque. With this extra 20 HP, the improved STI will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
Next to the engine upgrade, the STI will also get a Pioneer satellite navigational system fitted as standard. The system features touch-screen capability, Bluetooth, and iPod connection. The screen is also detachable and can be connected to a laptop via a USB port for easy downloading of additional information.
The list of equipment for the Subaru will also include symmetrical AWD, keyless entry and push button start, hill start assist, climate control, SI-Drive, leather Recaro seats, 18 inch alloy wheels, remote locking, satellite tracker, and cruise control.
Subaru UK didn’t mention the reason behind this added bonus, but we don’t think anyone in the UK will mind.

Nissan Altima outsells Camry, Accord in March, named best-selling sedan in America for first time
Nissan says it achieved a 9.7 percent U.S. market share in March, the highest single month in company history. Complementing March's heady number is an overall market share of 9.3 percent for Nissan in the first quarter of 2011. That represents a 0.3 percent gain in market share, building on 2010's 0.4 percent gain.
March also saw the Nissan Altima take the title of best-selling sedan in America, another company first. The Altima contributed 32,289 units to Nissan's 121,141-car total, which is nearly a 27 percent bump over last year's March figures. It isn't immediately clear what incentives Nissan had on the car during the month of March to aid sales, but presently, the Japanese automaker is offering zero-percent financing for up to 60 months or 1.9 percent APR financing for up to 72 months, or $1,250 cash back.
Had enough numbers? Too bad, Nissan isn't quite done. Monthly sales were up 28.4 percent for the division, another record, and Infiniti saw a 13.5 percent sales hike in March. With numbers this big, Nissan is looking at a banner year.
BMW M projects that didn't make it
BMW's M division comes up with some pretty crazy ideas – things like M3 pickups and M5 cabrios. Even the X6 M could be safely defined as 'radical.' And while some make it into production, there are plenty other awesome projects that never see the light of day.
While giving us a preview of the new M5 Concept, the Bavarian skunkworks division also showcased a few of those stillborn projects. One of them was a CSL version of the recently-departed M6 coupe, unburdened of 220 pounds of excess weight, given a power boost and fitted with active aerodynamics and an electronically deployed rear spoiler. But while the prototype was reportedly fully developed, the beancounters in Munich ultimately passed on its production.
The same fate reportedly befell an M8 prototype that would have slotted in above the 850 CSi. That particular coupe that was available packed with a 375-horsepower V12, but the never-was M8 was blessed with a lofty 550 hp from its 12-cylinder engine. After the M8 project was canceled, the engine was retasked for use in another supercar: the McLaren F1.
Another variant of that high-revving V12 – originally bound for Le Mans duty – was also placed in a first-gen X5 prototype with a six-speed manual, 700 horsepower and a 186-mile-per-hour top end. Another rear-drive X5 prototype developed by the M division was in attendance and, naturally, never reached production, along with an M-ified 318ti (hot), E46 M3 wagon (hotter), E39 M5 wagon (hottest) and one horribly overwrought red roadster (above) with a clear connection to the Z1 and Z3 convertible. And as for the E92-based M3 pickup; it was built as a replacement for beheaded and bedded E30 the M crew developed way-back-when to haul parts.
Finally, last year, BMW toyed with shoehorning the V12 engine into the outgoing M5 to replace its V10 and celebrate the model's 25th anniversary (it was first introduced in 1985), but found the engine bay just a little too tight for the Le Mans-based engine. Sigh.

By now, you’re probably well aware of the impact the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has had on the automotive industry. The destruction has forced some Japanese plants to shut down, and as a result, some parts produced in Japan can’t be shipped to America. Eighty percent of Hondas sold in the U.S. are built in the U.S., but plants still depend on Japanese suppliers for some parts. With fewer components, Honda has decreased production at American plants to ration supplies. Honda isn’t the only automaker impacted by this natural disaster. For detailed information on how the earthquake and tsunami have affected Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and some U.S. automakers, read What the Disaster in Japan Means for Car Buyers Here.
The deals Honda offered in March are good until May 5, but because of production issues, you may have trouble finding the model you want. Analysts expect the disruptions to continue until mid-June, so if you want a specific model or option, it may pay to wait.
Right now, you can get no money down and less than $300 in monthly payments on most models. The Honda Civic, Insight, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Fit and Civic Hybrid are available for lease with no money down. With the exception of the Odyssey, your monthly payments won’t be more than $300. These are exciting deals, but you should always check the competition to see if you’re really saving money.
With a gallon of gas reaching a national average of $3.60 at the end of March, you’re probably looking for a small, fuel-efficient vehicle. If so, look at the Honda Civic and the Fit. The financing deals on these models are identical, so what it comes down to is deciding which model best fits your budget and your lifestyle. The Fit averages as much as 28/35 mpg city/highway, while the Civic gets 25/36 mpg city/highway. The Fit is also about $700 cheaper than the Civic and has 57.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Get the Fit if you want one of the most utilitarian hatchbacks on the market, good fuel economy and a lower base price. As long as you don’t mind its exterior styling, you’ll be good to go. If you want a more conservative design, the Civic may suit your tastes.
Honda also makes two family oriented hybrids – the Insight and Civic Hybrid – but you might have trouble getting one. They’re produced in Japan, and currently, Honda isn’t taking orders for either model. If you can get one that’s still on dealer lots, there are a few things you should know. First, their performance isn’t as refined as the performance on the Fit or gasoline-only Civic. Second, neither is the best hybrid on the market. With fuel economy ratings of 40/43 mpg city/highway, you’ll visit the pump a lot less, but those ratings are significantly lower than the Toyota Prius’ 51/48 mpg city/highway. Then, there’s price. Of the three, the Insight is the least expensive. It starts at $18,200 – $4,850 less than the Prius. The Civic Hybrid is the priciest, and costs $900 more than the Prius. The Prius starts at $23,050. When you account for price and fuel economy, the Prius is the best deal. Unfortunately, this hybrid is in a similar predicament. Currently, it is in limited production, and some dealers have already started running out. Getting a Prius and the features you want could be difficult.
Whether you get the Civic Hybrid, Insight or Prius, do your research before heading to the dealership. Prices for vehicles built in Japan have started to rise, and some dealers may take advantage of consumers by hiking prices. To avoid shopping, you can always wait. Gas prices are unpredictable and may not stay high for long. And, with production slowly resuming in Japan, you should be able to get the model you want in the next few months.
